On Tuesday afternoon, WEIS Radio spoke to Centre Water Works & Sewer General Manager David Garrett concerning an issue involving Trihaloacetic acids slightly above drinking water standards.

Garrett said that although this is by no means an emergency situation, they wanted to notify their customers that they are taking steps to correct the matter. A letter outlining all the details was mailed to all their customers.

According to Garrett, they routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants.

Testing results they received in November show that the water system exceeded the standard or maximum contaminant level for Haloacetic acids. The standard is .060milligram per liter and the Centre Water Works system tested .061milligram per liter.

Garrett said stressed that this is NOT an immediate risk. He told us that Water Works Board recently installed a Granular Activated Carbon System at the water treatment plant to aid in the removal of organics which will reduce the levels of disinfection by products.
