County Extends “Families First Coronavirus Response Act” for Employees; New Emergency Equipment for First Responders Arrives

Monday’s meeting of the Cherokee County Commission featured a lengthy agenda including extension of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act – for up to 80 hours of emergency sick leave through March 31st (2021) – in regard to COVID-related illness.  That deadline of December 31st was NOT extended by the federal government therefore the County decided to extend that act on the local level for the sake of their employees; the Commissioners also awarded a bid for sixteen Panasonic CF-20 ToughBook two-in-one laptops to Pro-Logic ITS in the amount of $50,436.  This was in the form of a reimbursable grant.

In other business, the bid for a Jail/Records Management System, was awarded to Southern Software, Inc., in the amount of $69,528; a 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office was declared surplus – with permission for it to be sold at the next available public auction; approval was also granted to purchase two 2022 Mack GR64-F dump trucks for a combined total of $286,780 from Nextran Truck Center.  This is the first step toward a program of placing the county’s dump trucks in a rotation.

During the pre-meeting planning session, County EMA Director Shawn Rogers informed the Commission that the order of twenty (20) Lucas 3 chest compression units had arrived, and the two units allotted to EMS have already been put into service.  During the Commission meeting held on December 14th Rogers stressed the great need for these vital pieces of life-saving equipment.  Funding for the units was derived from the Cares Act.

The next meeting of the Cherokee County Commission is set for Monday, January 25th to be held at 5:00pm in the County Administration Building on the Cedar Bluff Road in Centre.
