Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth in “Men in Black: International”; Giles Keyte/Sony Pictures Entertainment(NEW YORK) — First the good news: Men in Black: International topped the box office with an estimated $28.5 million debut.
Now for the bad: The fourth installment of the 22-year-old series, starring Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, marked a franchise low; all three previous films opened with over $50 million.
Overseas, Men in Black: International delivered an estimated $73.7 million, putting its international totals at over $102 million.
The week’s other new release, Shaft, the sequel to the John Singleton-directed 2000 movie with the same title and again starring Samuel L. Jackson, also opened poorly, debuting in sixth place with an estimated $8.3 million, far below the million Warner Bros.
was expecting.
Finishing in second place was the animated adventure The Secret Life of Pets, dropping from first place last week with an estimated $23.8 million take. Internationally, it added an estimated .
5 million, for a global tally of nearly $155 million.
Aladdin grabbed an estimated $16.7 million for a third-place finish, and a four-week domestic total just shy of $264 million. The live-action remake of the Disney classic has collected more than $461 million overseas, for a worldwide total of nearly $725 million.
Disney/Fox’s Dark Phoenix dropped from second to fourth place in its second week of release, delivering an estimated $9 million. Worldwide, the 12th X-Men film and the direct sequel to 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, has collected around $204 million. Disney is the parent company of ABC News.
Rounding out the top five is Rocketman, grabbing an estimated $8.8 million in its third week of release.
The Jim Jarmusch zombie comedy The Dead Don’t Die, featuring an all-star cast including Adam Driver and Bill Murray, drew an estimated $2.5 million at 613 locations, while the Sienna Miller drama American Woman opened with estimated $102,825 from 117 locations.
