Floyd County, Georgia authorities have arrested a Cherokee County woman who fled from law enforcement on foot in the Cave Spring area around 11:00am Alabama time on Friday.  According to Cherokee County 9-1-1 – a BOLO was placed on Kayla LaRay Wright of Centre, for unauthorized use of a vehicle. 

Wright reportedly bailed out of the vehicle in the area of the Cave Spring Dollar General parking lot and then fled into a nearby wooded area. The nearby Cave Spring Elementary School was placed on lock-down during the incident

A statement issued by the Floyd County Police Department reads as follows:

“Police have arrested Kayla Wright following a lengthy search in Cave Spring. All schools have been notified. FCPD assisting Cave Spring PD with investigation. No officers injured.”

Press Release from the Floyd County Police Department: Police have arrested Kayla Wright following a lengthy search in Cave Spring. The 51-year-old woman was stopped by police following a look out from Alabama authorities about a vehicle that was taken without permission. Floyd County PD investigators are assisting with the ongoing investigation at the request of Cave Spring Police Department.

Cave Spring Elementary, Georgia School for the Deaf and Cave Spring Center were all placed on lock down as a result of the pursuit. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. At 11:14 am police were notified of the black Camaro that was taken from Cherokee County, Alabama. It was later observed by an officer on the lot of Dollar General, located at 19 Rome Road.

Major Carl Lively, of Floyd County Police Department, and Officer Brittney O’Bryant, of Cave Spring Police Department, made contact with the driver Kayla Wright. At some point during the interview the driver attempted to escape and used the vehicle as a weapon against the officers. Officer O’Bryant discharged her weapon at the vehicle engine in an attempt to disable the car, which had reversed at a high rate of speed and struck the Dollar General building. The driver escaped from a window and fled on foot in the direction of the Cave Spring Elementary School.

Officers set a perimeter around the school and neighboring streets for approximately two hours.

Officer Austin Waits (Floyd County PD) observed the suspect running between a set of apartments on Stewart Circle, located near the incident location. She was subsequently arrested without incident. A neighbor reported to police that he observed her taking clothes from a clothes line to disguise her appearance.

Charges pending investigation.
