GADSDEN– The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new scam targeting families of people in jail.
According to the office, callers tell victims they must pay for an incarcerated loved one’s ankle monitor before that person can leave jail. The callers claim the payment forms part of the person’s bond.
However, the Sheriff’s Office says the demand is fraudulent. Etowah County Community Corrections has received numerous calls from people trying to make such payments. In each case, the person calling wants money to secure an inmate’s release.
Officials urge residents not to send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or any other payment. Additionally, residents should never share personal or financial information with anyone making these demands.
Instead, anyone receiving such a call should stop and verify the claim through official channels. The Sheriff’s Office lists its 24-hour non-emergency number as 256-546-2825. Residents can also check the agency’s official website before responding to an unexpected demand.
The Sheriff’s Office says scammers are targeting people who already face stress and want to help someone they love. Therefore, families should slow down, verify every claim, and warn others about the scheme.
