CENTRE — An ALEA Boating Basics Course will take place Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, in Centre. Cherokee County EMA will host the free class from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The course will meet at the Cherokee County EMA office inside the Cherokee County Administration Building, located at 260 Cedar Bluff Road.

Course topics will include boating laws and regulations, safety practices, navigation fundamentals and responsible boating.

The class is open to participants ages 12 and older. Children younger than 12 are not eligible to take the exam. Anyone younger than 16 must attend with an adult who is at least 18.

Participants should bring a notepad and something to write with. They should also bring a driver’s license or have their Social Security number available if they do not have a license.

Experienced boaters may attend the course as a refresher. ALEA says its Marine Patrol Division promotes safe and responsible boating through education, enforcement and community activities.

There is no charge to attend. Those interested may register online for the Boating Basics Course.
