President Trump says he could beat Oprah, but doesn’t think she’ll run

Ever since Oprah Winfrey’s inspiring speech at Sunday night’s Golden Globes, #Oprah2020 has been trending. But if Oprah did run for president in 2020, her opponent would presumably be President Trump, running for re-election. What does he think of a possible candidate Winfrey? As you may have guessed, he thinks he’d win if they faced off against each other.

During a meeting with bipartisan lawmakers on Tuesday, Trump told reporters, “Yeah, I’ll beat her,” but added, “Oprah would be a lot of fun. I know her very well.”

“You know, I did one of her last shows,” he continued. “She had Donald Trump — this was before politics — her last week…she had Donald Trump and my family and it was very nice. But I don’t think she will run.”

He then reiterated, “I don’t think she’s going to run. I know her very well.”

It’s worth noting that in 1999, Trump said in an interview on CNN’s Larry King Live that if he ever ran for president, he’d want Oprah to be his running mate.

“If she’d do it, she’d be fantastic,” said Trump. “She’s popular. She’s brilliant. She’s a wonderful woman. If she’d ever do it…I don’t know if she’d ever do it.”

Oprah’s friend Gayle King said on Tuesday that the media mogul was “very intrigued” by the prospect of running, but that doesn’t mean she actually will.
