UPDATED / Polk County, Georgia Police Officer Reportedly Killed; Suspect Now in Custody

UPDATED

Very few details have been released however shortly after 11:00am Friday two Polk County Law Enforcement Officials were apparently fired upon while investigating a stolen vehicle.  One of the two officers was fatally wounded; meanwhile, the other was unharmed thanks to a bulletproof vest.

A perimeter was quickly set up in the area of Santa Claus Mountain and John Redding Road, between Cave Spring and Cedartown.  Law enforcement from multiple agencies descended upon the scene and early reports indicated that one subject was soon taken into custody as the search for a second suspect – Seth Brandon Spangler – continued.  The GBI immediately issued a “Blue Alert”, and stressed that Spangler should be considered “armed and dangerous”.  He was taken into custody shortly before 3:00pm.

According to Cherokee County Chief Investigator Josh Summerford – several Sheriff’s Office Investigators and Deputies assisted in the manhunt.

We’ll have additional information as it becomes available.

Floyd County Police, the Sheriff’s Office and a K-9 Unit are currently assisting Polk County Police and the Sheriff’s Office and Cedartown Police in the search for a suspect in what was reported as the shooting of a Polk County law enforcement officer Friday morning.

A perimeter has been set up in the area of Santa Claus Mountain and the John Redding Road between Cave Spring and Cedartown.

It appears one subject is in custody and another is being sought.  The GBI has issued a “Blue Alert” for Seth Brandon Spangler, a white male – standing five-feet-eight inches tall (5’8”) –  weighing 130 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair.

He is considered armed and dangerous.

Details are still sketchy at this time, but it appears two officers were actually shot with one having been fatally wounded, while the other was unharmed thanks to a bulletproof vest.

The incident reportedly occurred while the officers were investigating a stolen vehicle.

We’ll have more information as it becomes available.
