CENTRE– The Spirit of Cherokee is seeking community donations to help maintain the Avenue of Flags. The memorial display lines U.S. Highway 411 between Centre and Leesburg.
The display now includes 503 crosses and American flags honoring veterans from Cherokee County.
In addition, the organization displays the flags on seven holidays each year, weather permitting. Those observances are Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, July 4, Labor Day, Sept. 11, and Thanksgiving Day.
On Sept. 11, organizers display only the flags.
However, maintaining the tribute requires extensive work and ongoing financial support. As a result, the committee is asking the community to help preserve the tradition.
Donors should make checks payable to The Spirit of Cherokee. They may mail contributions to The Spirit of Cherokee, Inc., in care of the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce.
