GADSDEN– Gadsden State Community College has issued a traffic advisory for George Wallace Drive. The City of Gadsden will close the road beginning Monday, Sept. 14, for repairs.
The closure will extend from the Alabama Highway 759 exit to Padenreich Avenue. In addition, Gadsden State expects the closure to last approximately one week.
Both the East Broad and Wallace Drive campuses will remain open. However, students, employees, and visitors will need to use alternate campus entrances.
Drivers can reach the East Broad Campus from Padenreich Avenue using Brown Street, Galloway Street, or Fleming Street. Meanwhile, the Wallace Drive Campus will remain accessible from College Drive or Cardinal Drive.
Students may cross George Wallace Drive at Cardinal Drive. However, drivers cannot use the main Allen Hall parking lot entrance from George Wallace Drive during construction.
Motorists should expect delays, obey posted detour signs and traffic-control devices, and use caution near the work zone. Therefore, travelers should plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
In addition, Gadsden State plans to share updates as they become available.
Previously, the city and state announced a broader George Wallace Drive repaving project. That project extends from U.S. Highway 431 and Meighan Boulevard to Padenreich Avenue at Gadsden State.
