ABC News(NEW YORK) — South Korea’s Constitutional Court has unanimously upheld parliament’s decision to impeach President Park Geun-hye from office, BBC News reports.
The decision comes after months of turmoil and accusations of the president’s involvement in a corruption scandal.
With the ruling, Park loses her presidential immunity and could face criminal charges, according to BBC News.
Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, the country’s acting president, has called for calm amid building tensions. Protests erupted outside the court and authorities said two people died during the protests.
According to the BBC, An election must now be held within 60 days.
