Man Shot By Officers In Oxford After He attempted To Run Them Down

A man wanted out of Tennessee was shot to death in Oxford by police after he attempted to run several of them down with his vehicle.

According to Oxford Police Chief Bill Partridge, the incident happened Wednesday afternoon at Recreation Drive and Alabama 21.

Oxford police were contacted by Cleburne County authorities around 12:30 p.m. in pursuit of a man wanted out of Knox County, Tenn., driving a Ford Explorer.

The man, with officers in pursuit of him on Interstate 20 westbound, turned off on Alabama 21 in Oxford at a busy commercial intersection and into the parking lot of a Starbucks Coffee.

The vehicle crossed over Alabama 21 and came to a rest in a ditch. The man inside, who has not been identified, was dead at the scene. There were three officers who approached the vehicle and opened fire.

Partridge said the man, who suffers from post traumatic stress disorder, left his residence in Tennessee with a loaded firearm, according to authorities there. He has made threats in the past and has past charges of assault, evading and resisting arrest, as well as warrants for aggravated assault of public officials and resisting arrest.

The incident is being investigated by the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office. It is unclear if it is related to a similar incident involving a Tennessee man that happened this afternoon in Cherokee County.

The incident shut down traffic on the busy four-lane and drew the curious as police roped off the area and began their investigation.
