Your Body: Dealing with Your Child’s 'Firsts'

There’s a first time for everything but a recent poll found adults and children had different ideas on how old kids should be before they have certain first important experiences in their lives, such as getting a cellphone, a job or going out on a date.

The Harris poll covered other key firsts, such as wearing makeup, going on a sleepover or seeing an R-rated movie.

On average, poll respondents said that children were ready for a sleepover at age 11. Adults on average said they believe kids should get their first cellphone at 14 years of age. The poll also found that 9 out of 10 Americans thought kids were growing up too quickly today.

Here’s my take: There’s no medical right or wrong age for a lot of these things and it really comes down to your feelings as a parent and the individual nature of your child.
