KABC-TV(LOS ANGELES) — A driver in a reportedly stolen semi-truck led officers on a freeway chase in Southern California on Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The truck belongs to ACTenviro, an environmental and hazardous waste management firm, according to ACT spokesman Walter Singer.
Singer told ABC News that the truck had been en route from Sunnyvale, California to US Ecology in Nevada when it was reported stolen at 6:30 a.m. local time Tuesday.
Though the GPS tracking mechanism was deactivated when it was allegedly stolen, the truck had a secondary GPS system they were able to track, according to Singer.
The contents of the 18-wheeler were “pretty mundane,” Singer said. He explained that there was a limited flammability risk on the truck but no explosives, radiological hazards or biological hazards.
Deputies with the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department had initially tried to chase down the truck at 10:30 a.m. local time, but CHP officers took over the pursuit after the semi-truck merged onto the freeway, according to Officer Brian Alvarez with CHP’s Inland Division.
The chase ended peacefully early Tuesday afternoon, and the driver was taken into custody, Alvarez told ABC News.
