Lessburg Town Council Approves The Hiring Of A New Police Officer

The Leesburg Town Council has approved the hiring of former Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Dustin Huggins to fill a vacancy on the police department. Huggins was hired in at $14.02 per hour, the council also made a unanimous to raise the pay of Investigator Joe Johnson from $15.00 to $15.50 due to the fact he is taking on a larger work load and more responsibility.

In other business, the council heard from their Auditor Mike Sewell who presented the results of the town’s audit, Sewell said that there were no findings in the report and that the town was in good financial standing.

The council also approved a Lease Agreement with Alabama Power for property at the Leesburg Landing and gave authorization for Mayor Brandy Pierce to sign the necessary paper work.

The appointment of Poll workers for the upcoming Municipal Election was also announced in addition to a Resolution declaring no opposition in Place 1 or Place 3.

A lease agreement with the Leesburg Medical Clinic was also approved, the agreement will be the same as in the past but with some additional stipulations to be determined by Town Attorney Chad Hopper.

In an update on the sewer project, Mayor Brandy Pierce says that he along with the Town Attorney and the Bonding Company met and that the company has agreed to pay the town the amount that they requested minus one incident which will have to be paid through the insurance company.

Mayor Pierce said that the town has also sent a request for $75,000 for the parking lot project at the Leesburg Landing.

The council also approved the purchase of a new barbeque grill for the fire department and discussed putting up new welcome signs.
