Five Law Enforcement Officers And A Cherokee County Firefighter/EMT To Be Honored With Lifesaver Award

A special ceremony has been planned to recognize three Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Deputies,  a Centre and Cedar Bluff Police Officer as well as a Gaylesville Firefighter for their heroism in helping to rescue a woman from Weiss Lake after her vehicle left Highway 9 and flipped upside down in the frigid water back on December 28th of 2015.

On that night, a motorist flagged down Deputy Jeremy Stepps who just so happened to be traveling through the area and informed him of the accident. The vehicle had left the roadway near Blackwell’s Crossroads between Centre and Cedar Bluff and traveled down a small embankment before landing on its top in the lake.

It was at that time that Deputy Stepps along with Deputy Hunter Brisendine, Deputy Tyler Perea, Centre Officer Daniel Wooten, Cedar Bluff Officer Chris Vaughn and Gaylesville Firefighter/EMT Chris Storey went into the very frigid water, flipped the vehicle upright and rescued the driver, who was unconscious at the time, from the car pulling her to the shoulder of the road where they began CPR until paramedics could arrive.

The brave actions of these First Responders and Officers have warranted them being presented with the Lifesaver Award, the ceremony is set to take place on Monday, February 29th at 6:30 in the Chamber of Commerce Banquet Room on the campus of Gadsden State Cherokee in Centre.
