Tuesday afternoon, crews with the National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down resulting in storm damage in Cherokee County as storms moved through the area early Monday morning.

NWS crews say the EF-1 tornado with winds up to 105 mph touched down at 4:27 am about 5 miles north-northeast of Sand Rock.

The tornado intensified, snapping numerous trees along the southwestern slope of the canyon containing Johnnies Creek, then weakened as it moved near the mouth of Little River.

The tornado’s path ran about 3.4 miles long and about 550 yards wide before ending at around 4:34 am, about 4 miles northeast of Yellow Creek Falls.

Additionally, several homes nearby were damaged by falling trees, primarily along County Road 104 in Cedar Bluff.

However, NWS officials say that due to the sporadic nature of the structure damage, it was likely a result of straight line winds.

Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

Although there wasn’t a tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service for this storm, Cherokee County was placed under a severe thunderstorm warning, which included the possibility of a tornado.
