As a lifetime member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, David Dunaway is on a mission to help restore the final residence of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
Located in Biloxi, Mississippi, Beauvoir, the name by which the antebellum home is known, has certainly seen better days during its 165-year history.
The home notably received serious damage from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, requiring extensive repairs. Still, with the home’s age and proximity to the Mississippi coast, Beauvoir’s preservation is a work in progress.
Efforts to maintain the landmark, which sits at the site of the Jefferson Davis Presidential Museum and Library, are in need of funding.
That’s where Dunaway comes in.
Dunaway sees the preservation and restoration of the historical property as his duty as a member of the SCV.
He tells us more about Beauvoir and the current fundraising campaign:
His passion and efforts have certainly not gone unnoticed; the Sam Davis Camp 596, Mississippi Division of SCV, recently presented Dunaway with an award and accompanying medal for his work.
Dunaway though, views his contribution as simply his current calling until he’s needed elsewhere.
Here, he shares with us other efforts and events currently being organized by the SCV:
Dunaway is also considering plans a little closer to home, beginning with possibly organizing a local camp in Centre:
