Former Cherokee County Multi-Sport Standout Paul “Shorty” Trammell to be Inducted into Samford University Sports Hall of Fame

Former Cherokee County multi-sport standout Paul “Shorty” Trammell, along with his 1971 Bulldog football teammates, will be inducted into the Samford University Sports Hall of Fame this coming April 13th

The class will also be recognized at this year’s homecoming football game on November 3rd at Seibert Stadium.   The 1971 Samford University football team posted a 9-1 record and finished the regular season ranked seventh in the national UPI poll.  However, the most impressive achievement of the team was to win the NCAA College Division II West Region Championship with a 20-10 victory over Ohio Wesleyan in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. 

As the Bulldog quarterback, Trammell threw for over 3,300 yards and 27 touchdowns.  The three-time captain closed his career with over 4,000 all-purpose yards and 43 career touchdowns.  Trammell played professional baseball in the Atlanta Braves baseball organization.  In 1972, he was named MVP for the Wytheville, Va. Braves in Appalachian League.
