NASA has confirmed a large meteor broke apart over north Alabama Saturday night sending a fall of meteorites to the ground near Lake Weiss near Gaylesville.
The meteor called a fireball because of its brightness was about 15 inches in diameter and weighed close to 100 pounds. It was detected 57 miles above Hoodoo Road just east of the town of Beechgrove, Tenn. at approximately 10:19 p.m.
It traveled close to 100 miles at 47,000 miles an hour before breaking apart over the Alabama town of Henagar.
Based on its speed, final altitude and radar signatures, NASA scientists believe the fireball produced small meteorites on the ground.
