OXFORD– The City of Oxford will hold a public memorial service Friday, September 11, at 10 a.m. at Liberty Park.
Liberty Park is on the grounds of the Oxford Civic Center. The city is inviting residents and area first responders to attend the observance.
This year’s service will carry added significance because it marks 25 years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
The city and the Oxford Fire Department are hosting the memorial service. Oxford has held similar public observances for several years to remember the victims and recognize the service of first responders.
A Quarter-Century of Remembrance
In its announcement for the 2025 service, the city said the Oxford Fire Department had taken the lead each year. The department also invited first responders from surrounding communities to participate.
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum reports that the attacks killed 2,977 people and injured thousands. The attacks struck the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon and an area near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Since 2001, communities across the nation have gathered each September 11 to remember those who died. The observances also honor the first responders, military personnel and civilians whose actions demonstrated courage and sacrifice.
Oxford’s service will provide local residents with an opportunity to reflect, remember the victims and show support for those who continue serving their communities.
