CARTERSVILLE, GA. – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a fatal shooting involving a Bartow County sheriff’s deputy. The shooting happened Tuesday morning near a Cartersville McDonald’s and left a 31-year-old man dead.
The GBI identified the man as Marcus Maurice Williams of Cartersville. No deputies suffered injuries.
GBI Describes Early-Morning Encounter
According to the GBI, Bartow County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded around 6:30 a.m. Aug. 11. The call came from the McDonald’s at 1370 Joe Frank Harris Parkway SE.
Initially, someone reported that a man had pointed a gun at an employee.
A deputy arrived and found Williams in a nearby parking lot. The GBI said Williams was holding a gun.
The deputy then gave Williams verbal commands. However, the GBI said Williams did not comply.
According to investigators, Williams pointed the gun at the deputy and fired. The deputy then returned fire and struck Williams.
Emergency personnel took Williams to an area hospital. He later died from his injuries.
The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy.
Meanwhile, the agency has not identified the deputy or said how many shots were fired. The GBI also has not released additional information about the gun or any possible video of the encounter.
Independent Investigation Underway
The Bartow County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation.
Once agents complete their investigation, the GBI will send the case file to the Cherokee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
