JACKSONVILLE– More than 20 people attended the Jacksonville Police Department’s first firearms safety course.

The two-part program began with a classroom session earlier in the week. Participants later spent several hours on the firing range for practical instruction.

Officers Riggan, Shears, and Cone led the range session. The officers taught the fundamentals of safe firearm handling and basic shooting techniques in a live environment.

The course welcomed participants with different levels of firearms experience. Experienced shooters worked with officers to improve their accuracy and technique.

Meanwhile, first-time shooters gained experience handling and firing their weapons. The department said those participants became more comfortable between their first and final shots.

The range session also allowed students to apply lessons from the classroom portion of the course under officer supervision.

The Jacksonville Police Department said information about its next firearms safety course will be announced later.
