CENTRE– Daisha and Dalton Hamby brought race stories and newlywed news to Crystal Wells’ afternoon show Monday on WEIS.

The Northeast Alabama couple stopped by Oct. 12 to talk about life on CBS’ “The Amazing Race”. Their visit also offered a look at the laughter, preparation, and nerves behind their television adventure.

You can hear the interview below:

A Wedding With Mom’s Help

Daisha, known to viewers as Daisha Wilks, shared an update: she is now a Hamby. The couple married Sept. 29.

Spontaneous decisions have been part of their relationship, they said. But they chose their wedding date carefully: it marked three years since their first date.

Daisha initially suggested going to the courthouse, signing the papers, and calling it done. Then her mother offered another option: a venue and caterer, with a celebration that could still be small and intimate.

That is the option they chose. Her mother also had a hand in getting them onto national television.

The Opportunity That Kept Going to Voicemail

Daisha grew up watching “The Amazing Race,” but her mother suggested that the couple submit an audition video. The pair also joked that the casting team liked Daisha’s country accent.

They set up a camera in the yard, introduced themselves, and sent in the video in September 2024. Months later, the show began trying to reach them while they were traveling in Laos.

It was around midnight there. They were trying to get some sleep, but the unfamiliar number kept calling, so they sent it to voicemail.

An email finally explained who had been calling. At first, they thought the contact meant they had already landed a place on the show.

Instead, it marked the beginning of a competitive audition process. Several interviews followed before they learned they would race around the world for a chance at $1 million.

The pair also said they have shared the casting experience on their YouTube channel.

Training for Life, and Racing Into the Unknown

Before the show, the couple prepared by running around the Jacksonville State University campus with backpacks. That occasionally drew questions from people who knew them.

Because their participation was still a secret, they explained that they were training for travel. Asked what they were training for, they joked: “For life.”

They had traveled together before, but racing brought a different kind of pressure. On their own trips, they can choose what to do and when to do it.

On the show, opening the next clue means finding out where to go and what to tackle. They also recalled a first leg that felt close and scary.

The couple said that uncertainty, and the anticipation before a challenge, could be especially difficult.

Dalton’s route to television also has familiar local stops. As WEIS reported in September, the Weaver native graduated from Gadsden State Community College in 2020 before continuing at Jax State.

The two now work as videographers and share their travels through their Daisha & Dalton platforms.

Taking Alabama Along for the Ride

Their television adventure has also become a way to include people back home.

During the interview, they discussed a recurring bit with people they meet, including Alabama’s Randy Owen and Gov. Kay Ivey. They bring out a race clue and invite the other person to hand it over, just as someone would on the show.

“Here’s your next clue” has become a way to bring others into the experience. The couple also thanked the people who send encouraging messages and leave kind comments.

They said they read those messages, and having their community and state behind them means a great deal.

Fans can join them Wednesday, Oct. 14, for a watch party at Two Sisters Square in Scottsboro. The couple said free food will be available, and everyone is welcome.

They also encouraged guests to bring lawn chairs and blankets. They plan to answer questions during breaks while watching the fourth episode.

“The Amazing Race” airs Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. Central on CBS. Episodes also become available on Paramount+ the following day.

Outside the broadcast, viewers can follow Daisha & Dalton on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.

“We love Alabama and we want to bring Alabama all over the world,” the couple said.
