Rainbow City Firefighter Tucker McGlaughn Passes National Paramedic Examination

RAINBOW CITY– The Rainbow City Fire Department is congratulating Firefighter Tucker McGlaughn after he passed the National Registry Paramedic Certification Examination.

The department called the achievement a major career milestone. Officials also praised McGlaughn’s commitment to emergency medical care and professional growth.

According to the department, the accomplishment represents many hours of classroom lessons, clinical training, and field experience. McGlaughn completed that work while continuing his commitment to Rainbow City residents.

What Paramedic Certification Requires

The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians administers the national paramedic examination. Most people know the organization as NREMT.

Applicants must first hold an EMT certification or state license at the EMT level or higher. In addition, they must finish an accredited paramedic education program.

A program director then confirms that each applicant completed the required education. After meeting those requirements, candidates may take the national examination.

Passing the examination completes another major requirement for National Registry certification. The National Registry explains its paramedic certification process on its official website.

Since July 2024, NREMT has used one examination to measure entry-level paramedic skills. Previously, candidates took separate written and hands-on tests.

Now, the single examination measures medical knowledge, decision-making, communication, and leadership. As a result, candidates must show they can manage different parts of an emergency medical call.

What the Examination Covers

Candidates take the examination on a computer at an approved Pearson testing center. The test includes between 110 and 150 questions.

However, NREMT does not count 20 of those questions toward the final result. Instead, the organization uses them to test possible questions for future examinations.

Candidates receive up to three and a half hours to complete the test. Meanwhile, the computer changes the question difficulty based on each person’s answers.

The National Registry uses that format to measure whether a candidate meets its entry-level standard. More details appear in the official National Registry Paramedic Candidate Handbook.

The examination covers breathing problems, heart emergencies, trauma, medical calls, EMS operations, and patient care. It also tests care during pregnancy, childbirth, and other women’s health emergencies.

Clinical judgment makes up the largest part of the examination. Therefore, candidates must show they can review information and make proper patient-care decisions.

In addition, questions about children’s emergency care appear throughout the test. The heart care section also includes ECG rhythm strips.
