Heat Advisory Continues as National Weather Service Monitors Severe Storm Potential Through Thursday

BIRMINGHAM – Residents across Northeast Alabama should prepare for another round of dangerous heat while also remaining weather aware for the possibility of isolated severe thunderstorms through Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has placed much of Central Alabama, including portions of the WEIS listening area, under a Heat Advisory through Thursday evening. Forecasters say afternoon highs will range from 94 to 99 degrees, while heat index values are expected to climb between 105 and 110 degrees, creating a major risk for heat-related illnesses.

In addition to the dangerous heat, the National Weather Service has placed northern portions of the state under a Level 1 of 5 (Marginal Risk) for severe thunderstorms on both Wednesday and Thursday.

Damaging Winds Primary Severe Weather Threat

Forecasters say any storms that develop during the afternoon and evening hours could produce isolated damaging wind gusts. While the overall severe weather threat remains low, stronger storms may develop quickly, making it important for residents to monitor changing weather conditions.

The greatest chance for severe weather is expected across northern Alabama, including areas within the WEIS coverage region.

Take Precautions Against the Heat

With heat index values expected to reach as high as 110 degrees, the National Weather Service encourages residents to take extra precautions if spending time outdoors.

Officials recommend drinking plenty of water, limiting outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day whenever possible, and wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing. Young children, older adults, and pets are especially vulnerable to extreme heat and should never be left unattended in vehicles.
