Seniors participating in the Extended Family Leadership Academy (EFLA) were recently recognized for their achievements with a new distinction, as students at Gaylesville High School and Gaston High School became the first participants to receive graduation cords for completing the program’s 18-week leadership series.
The recognition marks a milestone for the Extended Family Leadership Academy, which focuses on preparing students for success through lessons centered on leadership, job readiness, communication, health, and financial independence.
Built around the motto, “Lead Yourself,” EFLA encourages students to become active participants in personal growth by embracing new ideas, self-evaluation, and skill development. Program leaders say students take pride in applying what they learn while preparing for adulthood and future career opportunities.
According to Extended Family, the idea for graduation cords originated with seniors in two separate EFLA groups who asked whether cords had ever been awarded to students completing the program. Officials said the request marked the first time students had expressed interest in receiving a graduation honor recognizing their work through the academy.
Following approval from school administrators, Extended Family leaders moved forward with the initiative and proudly presented cords to graduating seniors at Gaylesville High School in Cherokee County and Gaston High School in Etowah County.
In addition to leadership training, EFLA provides seniors with opportunities such as the annual Dress for Success Shopping Spree and scholarship programs aimed at helping students transition into adulthood with confidence and preparation.
Program officials expressed pride in the accomplishments of participating students, emphasizing that the academy’s mission is to help young people move from where they are to where they want to go in life.
Extended Family leaders also noted that the graduation cords serve as another way to remind students that they are valued and supported as they begin the next chapter of their lives.
