CALHOUN COUNTY — The Calhoun County Emergency Management Agency advises that prescribed burns will be conducted over the next three days at Mountain Longleaf National Wildlife Refuge.

Officials said Bains Gap Road may be closed intermittently for short periods to ensure the safety of personnel conducting the operations and to protect the public if smoke intensity creates hazardous driving conditions.

Prescribed burns are carefully planned, low-intensity fires ignited by trained personnel to reduce excess hazardous vegetation, commonly referred to as fuel loads. By removing this buildup under specific weather conditions, land managers can significantly reduce the risk of uncontrolled wildfires during periods of dry or adverse weather.

In addition to lowering wildfire risk, prescribed burning plays an important role in maintaining and improving wildlife habitat. Reducing hazardous fuels helps prevent severe wildfires that can cause long-term damage to ecosystems and native species.

Residents with questions about the prescribed burns may contact the Mountain Longleaf National Wildlife Refuge manager at 256-848-6833.

Motorists traveling in the area are encouraged to use caution and remain alert for potential road closures or reduced visibility due to smoke.
