Fire Danger Statement Issued for North Georgia, Including Rome Area

A Fire Danger Statement is in effect for north Georgia, including the Rome area, for this afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service in Atlanta.

Forecasters warn that very low relative humidity, dropping to 15 to 20 percent, combined with dry vegetation and gusty east winds of 7 to 12 miles per hour, with gusts up to 20 miles per hour, will create conditions favorable for the rapid spread of fires.

 Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning and urge residents to use caution with equipment, vehicles, or activities that could produce sparks or open flames.

 The National Weather Service says these elevated fire weather conditions could lead to dangerous situations if fires develop and is urging residents across north Georgia to remain alert.
