ROME– Floyd County commissioners have approved a $1,510,310 contract for a new Floyd County police training facility and shooting range.

The award to Vision Development & Construction advances the Police Department Shooting Range & Training Center at the department’s Glenwood campus in Rome. Commissioners approved the contract Tuesday, Oct. 13, according to Coosa Valley News.

The county’s meeting agenda identifies 2023 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds as the funding source. It also states that the award requires no budget change.

Training Center and Shooting Range Planned

Project documents identify the site as 1 Police Plaza in Rome. The planned facility totals 5,346 square feet, including a 1,828-square-foot training center and a 3,518-square-foot shooting range.

Together, those components would place training space and firearms practice facilities on the police department’s existing campus.

The construction specifications identify E Dunay Design as the architect. In addition, the specifications require the adjacent police station to remain operational during construction.

That requirement means construction must accommodate an active police facility as work proceeds nearby.

SPLOST Allocation Predates Contract Award

Meanwhile, the county’s year-end 2024 SPLOST report already listed a $2 million budget for the Police Training Facility.

That report provides a record of the project’s funding allocation before Tuesday’s construction award. However, the allocation and contract amount represent different financial measures.

The $1,510,310 award covers the construction contract. The earlier $2 million figure represents the project allocation shown in the historical report.

Therefore, the difference alone does not establish final project savings. A complete accounting would also need to identify design, equipment, and other project expenses.

Construction Details Still to Come

Tuesday’s approval moves the project beyond the bid consideration listed on the agenda. However, the materials available for this report do not establish a construction start date or opening date.

They also do not establish whether other agencies could use the facility or whether it would offer any public access.

For now, the confirmed action is the construction award for a shooting range and training center at the Floyd County Police Department campus.
