BIRMINGHAM – For the first time since 2002, the Cherokee County Lady Warriors will play for a state volleyball title.
The Lady Warriors swept their way to the Class 4A title match by sweeping St. Michael’s Catholic and Orange Beach in the state volleyball tournament at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Wednesday. They defeated St. Michael’s in their opener 25-15, 25-10, 25-15, then advanced to the title match with a 25-11, 25-15, 25-11 victory over Orange Beach.
Cherokee County will battle Prattville Christian at 2 p.m. at Bill Harris Arena in the championship match. Prattville Christian also swept its way to the championship on Wednesday by defeating Madison County and Alexandria.
In the Lady Warriors’ victory over St. Michael’s, senior libero Ellisan Givens collected her 2,500th career dig in the first set. Givens finished the match with 28 digs, six assists, four aces, and two kills.
Macy Lea added 31 assists, 11 digs, five kills, and three aces. Nevaeh Gaidurgis delivered 14 kills, five digs, and an assist. Jolie Alexander accounted for nine kills and three digs. Ava Haygood managed seven kills, five digs, and an ace.
Jesslyn Hincy contributed seven digs, three assists, an ace. Mattie Green earned four kills, three digs and a block. Raegan Garmany gained three kills and three digs. Sydni Frost posted a pair of digs. Jolie Alexander finished with an ace.
In the semifinal win over Orange Beach, Givens delivered 15 digs, an ace and an assist. Lea earned 32 assists, 11 digs, three kills and an ace. Gaidurgis came away with 12 kills and 10 digs. Haygood had eight kills, five digs, and a block.
Alexander collected seven kills, five digs, two aces and an assist. Garmany and Green both had three kills. Hincy finished with a dig and an ace.
