Father-in-Law Arrested in Fatal Attalla Shooting

Attalla, Ala. – The Attalla Police Department has confirmed that a Foley man is in custody following a fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday morning in the area of Burke Avenue and Osborn Street.

According to authorities, officers responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 10:12 a.m. on October 7. Upon arrival, they encountered Arthur Reynolds, 64, of Foley, who surrendered to police without incident and was taken into custody.

Officers then discovered David Loyd Smothers, 40, of Attalla, deceased inside a nearby vehicle. Preliminary findings indicate that Smothers had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.

Investigators have determined that Reynolds is the father-in-law of the victim. He has been charged with Capital Murder and is currently being held without bond at the Etowah County Detention Center.

Attalla Police Chief Doug Jordan said there is no ongoing threat to the community, as all individuals involved are in custody. “We appreciate the public’s cooperation and patience as officers continue their work in the area,” Chief Jordan said. Residents were asked to avoid the immediate vicinity while the investigation was processed.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation. The Attalla Police Department expressed appreciation to the Etowah County District Attorney’s Office and the Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Forensics for their assistance in the case.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the families that are involved in this terrible incident,” the department said in a statement.
