Centre Council Weighs Estimated $950,000 to Finish Gym Project

CENTRE– The final phase of Centre’s gym project could cost about $950,000 and give the city space to host volleyball tournaments. Architect Thomas M. McElrath gave the City Council a preliminary estimate of about $2 million for the entire project.

At a special called meeting Wednesday, the council discussed continuing the bidding process to get firmer construction costs. The first two phases cost about $901,000. Several council members had expected funding to be available for Phase 3 after the first two phases. However, some members said a portion of the bond money went toward the new City Hall.

McElrath referred to figures dating back to 2020 as he discussed the scope of the project. Phase 3 plans call for a larger building with air conditioning, motorized basketball goals, and motorized bleachers. The expansion would also allow the gym to host volleyball tournaments.

The council expects a Nov. 10 prebid meeting with contractors to help clarify the work involved. Meanwhile, Nov. 17 is the proposed date to open bids. The city reserves the right to reject any or all bids.

At its next meeting, the council also expects more cost information to help it weigh financing options.
