CENTRE– Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver is encouraging residents to practice simple crime prevention habits and look out for their neighbors during October.

In a National Crime Prevention Month message, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office shared reminders about home security, vehicle theft, scams, and reporting suspicious activity.

“Keeping Cherokee County safe takes all of us. During National Crime Prevention Month, I encourage everyone to take a few simple precautions and look out for one another. Small habits can help prevent opportunities for crime,” said Sheriff Jeff Shaver.

Secure Homes and Vehicles

Shaver encourages residents to lock their homes and vehicles and keep valuables out of sight. In addition, he urges drivers to remove keys, firearms, and other valuables from their vehicles.

The reminders also emphasize taking precautions as part of everyday routines.

Watch for Scams and Report Concerns

The sheriff also cautions residents about unexpected calls or messages requesting money or personal information.

Meanwhile, anyone who notices suspicious activity should report it rather than confront someone themselves. The message encourages residents to look out for one another while leaving the response to law enforcement.

Finally, the sheriff’s office thanked residents for helping make Cherokee County a safer place to live, work, and visit.
