CENTRE– Extended Family is beginning its 2026–27 youth programs in schools and juvenile diversion programs across Northeast Alabama. Groups will serve students in Calhoun, Cherokee, DeKalb, and Etowah counties.

The organization expects to reach hundreds of students this fall through more than 40 groups. During the 2025–26 season, its two programs enrolled more than 1,000 students for the first time. Those students ranged from kindergarten through 12th grade, Extended Family said.

Both programs offer lessons aimed at physical, mental, emotional, and moral development. In addition, school counselors and juvenile diversion partners help identify students and coordinate the groups. Extended Family also credited program leaders from varied professional and personal backgrounds for their work with children.

Extended Family for Kids serves students in kindergarten through 12th grade who have ever had a loved one incarcerated. Its lessons encourage healthy choices and build self-esteem and communication skills. They also address stress, anger, shame, and feelings of isolation.

Meanwhile, Extended Family Leadership Academy follows the motto “Lead yourself.” Its lessons cover job readiness, health, communication, and financial independence. The program also helps students set personal and career goals, according to the organization.

Extended Family said its leaders want each child to leave a group meeting knowing, “You matter.” More information about both programs is available at extendedfamilyhelp.org.
