Extended Family for Kids Leader Training Set for Sept. 23 in Montgomery

MONTGOMERYExtended Family will hold Extended Family for Kids leader training Wednesday, Sept. 23, in Montgomery.

The one-day session will help adults guide children through stress, anger, and family upheaval. The program focuses on children who have a loved one in jail or prison.

The Alabama Department of Youth Services will host the session at 1 Ed Castille Way. The training runs from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Registration costs $70 per person.

Nine-Lesson Curriculum Gives Adults Practical Tools

Extended Family developed EFK as an evidence-based, nine-lesson curriculum for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

The program serves children who have a loved one in jail or prison. Also, schools and agencies may use EFK for other children who need extra support.

First, the lessons help students build self-esteem and make healthy choices. They also teach children how to manage stress, anger, shame, and isolation.

In addition, students practice stronger communication skills. As a result, the program supports their emotional, mental, and physical health.

During the training, participants will work through all nine lessons and complete hands-on activities. Therefore, they can see how each lesson works before leading a group.

The curriculum guide will then help them start an EFK group in their school, agency, or community.

Previous WEIS coverage of EFK leader training showed how the program prepares adults to become trusted guides for children.

Training Serves Schools, Agencies and Law Enforcement

Extended Family welcomes school administrators, counselors, teachers, and other school employees.

The training also serves school resource officers, law enforcement officers, and juvenile probation officers. Moreover, community resource agency workers and volunteers may attend.

The same invitation extends to Children’s Policy members and Child Protective Services workers. Private counselors and Children’s Advocacy Center staff may also participate.

These adults often see children during difficult times. Therefore, the training gives them practical tools they can use right away.

Materials Prepare Leaders to Start EFK Groups

Each participant will receive the Extended Family for Kids Curriculum Guide, handouts, activity supplies, and an information packet.

In addition, the training provides the materials needed to begin leading a group. Together, those resources give new leaders a clear plan for each lesson.

After the session, graduates will receive an EFK Program Leader Certificate of Completion. Extended Family will also give each graduate a program leader shirt.

Moreover, Extended Family charges no additional licensing or annual renewal fees.

Subgrant #2025-JF-C1-421 supports the training project. The Law Enforcement and Traffic Safety Division of the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and the U.S. Department of Justice awarded the grant.

Finally, individuals may register through the official event page. Agencies registering several people can email daphne@extendedfamilyhelp.org for assistance.
