NORTHEAST ALABAMA– Extended Family is seeking volunteer guest speakers for its Leadership Academy programs during the new school year.
The organization plans to lead groups in schools and juvenile diversion programs across Cherokee, Calhoun, DeKalb, and Etowah counties. It also expects to offer programs in other parts of Alabama.
Guest speakers share practical information about careers, job readiness, health, healthy relationships, communication, and financial independence.
Extended Family hopes to connect students with community members who can offer career guidance and sound advice for everyday life.
Guest Speakers Bring Lessons to Life
Leadership Academy speakers often use games and demonstrations to help students understand their messages.
Career coaches Heather Money and Jennifer Bright present a lesson titled “What Is the Path to Your Dream Career?”
Their lesson teaches students how to set SMART goals. The program defines those goals as specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely.
Money and Bright use a team activity involving a ball and a bucket to show the value of cooperation.
At first, one student throws the ball while blindfolded. Another student holds the bucket but cannot move it.
During later attempts, more team members join the activity. The group eventually works together to move the ball down the line and reach the goal.
The exercise shows students that guidance and teamwork can make goals easier to achieve.
Programs Support Families Affected by Incarceration
Extended Family works with community members and partner agencies to help families dealing with incarceration.
Its programs seek to prevent children from entering the juvenile justice system. The organization also works to reduce repeat offenses among youth and adults.
Another goal focuses on breaking the cycle of incarceration within families.
Extended Family says stronger families can help build safer communities.
The new school year will create more opportunities for Leadership Academy speakers to reach students across the region.
