GADSDEN– The Gadsden State Community College Police/Public Safety Department has welcomed Richard Johnson as a part-time public safety officer/medic.
Johnson brings decades of firefighting, emergency medical services, and community involvement to the college’s public safety team.
Chief Jay Freeman said Johnson’s experience will strengthen the department’s ability to respond to campus emergencies.
“Adding someone with Richard’s extensive background in emergency services, EMS and public safety strengthens our ability to respond when people need us most,” Freeman said. “His experience and commitment to serving others will be a tremendous asset to Gadsden State.”
According to the department, Johnson is a lifelong Etowah County resident and a graduate of Glencoe High School. His interest in the fire service began at age 16, when he first joined a fire department.
In 1989, the Rainbow City Fire Department hired Johnson, fulfilling his goal of becoming a professional firefighter. He then served for 31 years before retiring with the rank of assistant fire chief.
After his retirement, Johnson served as chief of the Glencoe Fire Department for seven years, the announcement said.
Johnson earned his EMS certification through Gadsden State Community College. In addition, he attended the Alabama Fire College, where he received numerous fire service certifications. He also served on the Arson Task Force.
His community involvement extends to youth athletics as well. Johnson has coached football at Glencoe High School for 30 years, according to the department. He has also coached baseball and golf, mentoring generations of young athletes.
Johnson is a member of North Glencoe Baptist Church, where he serves on the security team. He also continues to serve as a reserve deputy with the Etowah County Sheriff’s Department. In addition, he is a member of the Etowah County Dive Team.
