GADSDEN– The juvenile suspect in Friday night’s Gadsden Waffle House shooting turned himself in to his attorney at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday and is now in custody, Gadsden Mayor Craig Ford announced.
Gadsden City Schools also sent out a recorded message Sunday announcing the development.
In a statement, the Gadsden Police Department confirmed that the suspect wanted in connection with the shooting is now in custody.
According to the department, the case required work from officers across Gadsden police. Responding officers, Criminal Investigations Division detectives, and forensic scientists each contributed to the investigation.
In addition, police thanked partner agencies for their assistance and support throughout the case.
“An arrest cannot undo what happened Friday night,” police said. “We continue to pray for the injured parties and victims, their families, and everyone affected by this shooting.”
However, authorities have not publicly released the juvenile’s identity or announced any charges.
Earlier, police said investigators had obtained a pickup order for a juvenile suspect. The department said Alabama law restricts what authorities may release about juveniles.
Shooting Wounded Four Juveniles
Officers responded at approximately 10:45 p.m. Friday to the Waffle House at 1000 Rainbow Drive after receiving reports of gunfire.
The shooting wounded four juveniles, and emergency crews transported them for additional medical care. Ford said Saturday that all four victims were stable and expected to survive.
The shooting happened shortly after a Gadsden City football game. The restaurant is a popular gathering place for students and families following Friday night games.
Meanwhile, Ford said the shooting followed an earlier fight involving a student who had recently transferred into the Gadsden City school system.
The investigation remains active. Furthermore, police said detectives will continue working to ensure every part of the case is handled properly.
