Cherokee and Etowah County Join Nationwide Recognition of Correctional Officers and Employees Week
May 3–9, 2026 Observance Highlights the Service, Safety Role, and Professionalism of Corrections Staff

National Correctional Officers and Employees Week is observed annually during the first full week of May, with the 2026 observance running from May 3 through May 9. The week serves to recognize the essential but often underappreciated work of correctional professionals who maintain safety, security, and order within jails and prisons across the country.

The observance was first established through a 1984 proclamation by President Ronald Reagan, who acknowledged the critical role correctional officers and employees play within the justice system. The week has since become a national opportunity to honor the dedication, professionalism, and sacrifice of those working behind the walls of correctional facilities.

In Cherokee County, the recognition was recently formalized when the Cherokee County Commission approved a proclamation designating May 3–9, 2026, as Cherokee County Correctional Officers Week. Several correctional officers were present during the proclamation, where county leaders expressed appreciation for their service and commitment to public safety.

Commission Chairman and county officials recognized the demanding nature of correctional work, noting the importance of the staff who manage daily operations inside the county jail. Jail Administrator Siera Wilkes also spoke to the professionalism and consistency demonstrated by corrections’ personnel in carrying out their duties. Sheriff Jeff Shaver joined in the recognition, emphasizing the importance of the profession and the individuals who perform it.

WEIS Radio spoke with Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver regarding the role of correctional officers in the county facility and the significance of taking time to formally recognize their work. Shaver highlighted the responsibility carried by staff who work in a high-stress environment that requires constant vigilance, sound judgment, and professionalism.

Sheriff Shaver said ” This week, we recognize the men and women who serve behind the walls of our correctional facility.
During National Correctional Officers and Employees Week, we pause to thank our corrections officers and staff for the
professionalism, strength, and dedication they show every single day.
“Their work is not always seen, but it is essential to the safety of Cherokee County. They manage difficult situations with patience and integrity, and they play a critical role in maintaining order, security, and respect within our facility. I am proud of the way our team serves with commitment and compassion,” Sheriff Shaver said.
To every member of our corrections team, thank you for what you do and the sacrifices you make. Your service does not go unnoticed, and it is deeply appreciated. Please join us in thanking our corrections officers and staff for their service to our community!”

Across the region, correctional professionals serve in roles that extend beyond security and supervision. Their responsibilities include maintaining order in secure environments, managing high-risk situations, preventing the introduction of contraband, and supporting rehabilitation efforts designed to reduce recidivism. Many officers also contribute to inmate education, counseling, and behavioral programs that prepare individuals for eventual reentry into society.

Correctional facilities operate under constant pressure, requiring staff to remain alert and responsive at all times. Officers regularly face challenging and unpredictable situations while ensuring the safety of both inmates and fellow staff members. Their work plays a direct role in public safety by preventing escapes, reducing internal violence, and supporting structured environments where rehabilitation can take place.

In neighboring Etowah County, Sheriff Jonathan Horton also recognized correctional officers during the week, emphasizing both the visibility and importance of their work within the broader justice system.
” During Corrections Officers Week, we take time to recognize the men and women who serve behind the walls often out of the spotlight, but never out of importance.
Our corrections officers carry a responsibility that goes far beyond supervision. They maintain order in a challenging environment, ensure the safety of inmates and staff, and play a critical role in the justice system. Their professionalism, awareness, and commitment are what keep our facilities secure day in and day out.
This week is a reminder that what you do matters—not just inside the facility, but across the entire community. You are a vital part of public safety.
“Strength isn’t just shown in action, it’s proven in discipline, consistency, and doing the right thing when no one is watching.”
On behalf of this office, thank you for your dedication, your resilience, and your service.”
As National Correctional Officers and Employees Week continues through May 9, agencies across the country are holding recognition events, appreciation ceremonies, and internal observances to honor staff members. The week stands as a reminder of the demanding conditions correctional professionals face daily and the critical role they play in maintaining both institutional safety and broader community security.
