County Commission Deals With Two Emergencies; Honors Corrections Officers

Centre- During the regular meeting of the County Commission Monday afternoon, Commission Chairman Tim Burgess asked the Commission to ratify the filing of a legal complaint and motion for a temporary restraining order relating to an emergency county road situation in Commission District 4.

During the Planning Session the Commission was informed the air-conditioning units at the County Library stopped working. The Commission approved the purchase of two units at a cost of $23,000 total from Foote Refrigeration. The cost will be financed through the Capital Improvement Fund.

The Commission approved a Proclamation recognizing May 3rd–May 9th, 2026 as Cherokee County Correctional Officers Week. Several Corrections Officers were present for this Proclamation. Chairman Burgess thanked the Officers for the outstanding job they do on behalf of the County. Siera Wilkes Jail Administrator, also praised the Officers for the remarkable job they perform, and the professionalism displayed during the course of their work. Sheriff Jeff Shaver also praised the group of officers and thanked them for their dedication and service.

A Resolution was approved recognizing Jerry Lockridge for 30 years of Service on the Cherokee County Healthcare Authority Board. Chairman Burgess was to present it to Mr. Lockridge at the Authority’s Board Meeting later in the evening.

A grant agreement from the USA Semi Quincentennial Commission for a $2500 Grant to be used toward signs, the parade and other expenses connected to the opening of the new courthouse was approved as well as a Memorandum of Understanding with the Rotary Club of Centre for the So-Cool Program.

They approved a job posting for the Animal Shelter for an Animal Care Worker 1, Grade 3 Step 1.

The commission also approved the closing of the County Offices and the Cherokee County Courthouse on Friday, May 1st from 9:30 am until 1 pm, so County Employees can attend the Opening of the New Courthouse.

The Next meeting of the Cherokee County Commission will be May 11th at 10am in the Commission Chambers.
