Attalla Man Charged with Arson and Animal Cruelty in Ivalee Structure Fire

IVALEE, Ala. – An Attalla man is facing serious charges after a structure fire in the Ivalee community resulted in the deaths of three dogs and revealed signs of intentional arson, according to the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office.

On July 2, the Ivalee and Gallant Volunteer Fire Departments, along with the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Unit, responded to a blaze on Rogers Road. Upon arrival, emergency crews found Markus Robert Landrum of Attalla at the scene. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

A joint investigation by the Etowah County Criminal Investigations Division and the Etowah County Arson Task Force determined the fire had been deliberately set. Investigators discovered that three dogs—a German Shepherd, a Chihuahua, and a Dachshund—were inside the home at the time and did not survive.

Authorities believe the incident may have stemmed from a domestic-related situation. Landrum has since been arrested and charged with second-degree arson and three counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

“This is a deeply disturbing case that shows a blatant disregard for life and property,” said Sheriff Jonathon Horton. “We are thankful for the swift response from our local fire departments and our investigators who are working hard to ensure justice is served.”

Landrum is currently being held in the Etowah County Jail on a $60,000 bond. The investigation remains active, and officials say additional details may be released as the case develops.
