Asbury rallies past Gaylesville boys in second half for 61-55 basketball victory

GAYLESVILLE – The Gaylesville Trojans built a 10-point first-quarter lead and held an 8-point advantage at halftime only to see the Asbury Rams battle back in the second half to take a 61-55 victory in the Gaylesville Basketball Christmas Classic on Wednesday.

Landon Bethune led the Rams with 19 points, including four 3-pointers. Caleb Gentry collected 18 points and Jayven McCoy finished with nine points.

The Trojans sank 11 treys in the game, led by Kyler Bradley’s four 3-pointers and 26 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds, had seven steals, an assist and a block.

Kuper Bradley connected on three treys and had 13 points along with three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Collin Hendon had seven points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Daylen Dobbins delivered six points on a pair of treys. He also had four boards, two steals and an assist.

Gaylesville led 23-13 after a quarter and held a 34-26 edge at halftime. Asbury went out in front 48-42 at the end of the third quarter and held on down the stretch for the final.

Asbury advances to face Collinsville at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday in the winners bracket. Gaylesville takes on Talladega County Central in the tournament losers bracket on Thursday at 1:45 p.m.

Girls

Hokes Bluff 37, Gaylesville 14

GAYLESVILLE – The Hokes Bluff Lady Eagles scored the first 11 points and built a 21-point halftime lead to cruise to a 37-14 basketball win over Gaylesville in the Gaylesville Basketball Christmas Classic on Wednesday.

Addison Simmons led the Lady Eagles with seven points. Dixie Saylor, Ryan Lumpkin and Mazely Ball each finished with five points.

Gracie Dawson led the Lady Trojans with 12 points.

Hokes Bluff held a 9-0 edge at the end of the first quarter and led 23-2 at halftime. The Lady Eagles maintained a 21-point lead at 31-10 after three quarters.

Hokes Bluff advances to the winners bracket where the Lady Eagles will play Pleasant Valley at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Gaylesville plays Talladega County Central in the losers bracket at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.
