Compiled by The AHSAA

MONTGOMERY – Six area high school football players were recognized for their performances in Week 2 on Wednesday morning.

Jacob Cornejo accumulated 195 rushing yards on 20 carries and scored twice as the second-ranked Cherokee County Warriors blanked Good Hope 35-0 in their Class 4A, Region 6 opener.

Collinsville freshman quarterback Mason McAteer completed 7-of-13 pass attempts for 186 yards and two touchdowns (65 and 53 yards) to lead the Panthers to a 39-6 win over Section. He also ran for 40 yards on five carries with two scores of 9 and 8 yards.

Cedar Bluff had three players honored in their 38-27 loss at Woodville. Kaden Pack completed 10-of-18 pass attempts for 174 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 67 yards on nine carries and had five tackles on defense.

Eli McFry was Pack’s top pass catcher after hauling in four receptions for 110 yards, including an 82-yard touchdown.

Hunter Jenkins tallied seven tackles on defense to go along with 138 yards rushing with two touchdowns on 28 carries.

Spring Garden’s Jacob Welsh led the Panther defense with 10 tackles in a 41-7 loss at Wadley.

In other statewide happenings, Albertville High School honored the memory of teammate Julius “JJ” Staten prior to last week’s game versus Florence High School. Staten died on Labor Day in a car accident.

The awesome display of compassion – by both teams – captures this week’s AHSAA Football Spotlight for Week 2 of the 2023 football season.

Newspaper accounts described the ceremony. The Aggies’ cheerleaders and fans wore shirts with his number (58). Some students in the student section wore baby blue paint, his favorite color, and had his initials painted on their backs. The Albertville team captains took his jersey with them to the pre-game coin toss at midfield, and the players hugged his mother Christine Wiley prior to the game. She joined them later on the sidelines to encourage her son’s teammates, who wore the number 58 decal on their helmets. Coaches wore buttons with his jersey number.

And on the first snap of the game, players brought his jersey back onto the field and placed it at his noseguard position. Florence’s team took a delay of game to honor their opponents’ grief, and the penalty was declined.

“It’s a tough thing to lose such a good friend and teammate,” Albertville head coach William Browne said. “Our kids I think responded, and I’m very proud of them.”

Florence went on to win the Class 7A, Region 4 contest 28-6. However, the compassion and love that shined in J.J. Staten’s memory proved to be a “winning” moment that touched everyone in attendance.

Among the on-the-field performances that share the AHSAA Spotlight this week, Winston County High School junior Rakim Moore proved to be the ultimate triple threat for Coach Chris Simmons’ Yellow Jackets. The 5-foot-10, 155-pound running back rolled up 388 total yards in last week’s 62-28 victory over Carbon Hill – scoring three touchdowns three different ways.
Moore had 19 carries for 181 rushing yards and one TD, caught four passes for 132 yards and another TD and completed a 75-yard pass for another score. Winston County (2-1) averaged gaining 19.4 yards each time he touched the ball.

Teammate and quarterback Landon Kelley, a 6-1, 170-pound sophomore, accounted for six touchdowns in the win, three rushing and three passing, and 357 total yards. The Yellow Jackets’ quarterback was 9-of-12 passing for 256 yards and rushed seven times for 111 yards. Senior receiver Eli Moore was on the receiving end of five pass completions for 193 yards and scored two TDs. He also rushed once for 30 yards giving him 223 total yards. Between the trio, they combined for 968 yards – albeit some of the yardage belonging to all of them.

Winston County opens up Class 2A, Region 5 play this week against unbeaten Sulligent (3-0) at Double Springs Friday night. The Blue Devils are 1-0 in the seven-team region after beating Carbon Hull 62-28 last week.

Two other outstanding efforts from West Morgan’s Jalen Fletcher and Tuscaloosa Academy’s Preston Lancaster joined Moore and his Winston County pals in this week’s AHSAA Spotlight.

Fletcher accounted for seven touchdowns and 350 yards total offense as the Rebels, coached by Drew Phillips, beat Brooks 83-53. He had 21 carries for 244 yards and five TDs and caught two passes for 110 yards and one score as Class 4A West Morgan (3-0) set a school record for most points scored in a single game.

The 136 points scored by both teams tied for fourth on the AHSAA all-time single-game list. The record (146) was set by Childersburg (82) and Central Coosa (64) in a 2016 game.

Parrish, now closed, beat Hubbertville 81-58 in 2003 and Central-Florence edged Westminster Christian 70-69 last year to tie for second most with 139 points in each contest.
Brooks and West Morgan’s 136 points tied Decatur Heritage (76) and Ragland (60) in a 2021 Class 1A playoff game, and Slocomb (124) vs. Houston County (12) in a 1931 game, according to the AHSAA Record Book, which can be found online at www.ahsaa.com on the football page.

Class 2A Tuscaloosa Academy’s Lancaster was 18-of-34 passing for 435 yards and four touchdowns as the Knights of Coach Josh Knight downed Aliceville 44-23, also in Class 2A, Region 5. He rushed for two short touchdowns in the win. Tuscaloosa Academy and Winston County are set to play Oct. 13 at Double Springs.
