Possibility for Severe Weather Across the Area on Friday

We could see some severe storms across our area today (Friday).

Portions of South Alabama experienced multiple severe thunderstorm warnings, and a tornado warning, with a complex of storms still moving through as of 6:00am today – continuing to track eastward on the way to Georgia and Florida.  The Storm Prediction Center is maintaining a Level 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather for parts of east and south Alabama – in anticipation of more storms developing and becoming severe – starting later this morning ahead of a cold front.

A Level 3 risk means numerous severe storms will be possible.  The strongest storms could have damaging wind gusts that could bring down trees and power lines.  Hail is also a possibility.  The tornado risk is low but not zero, according to forecasters.  Storms aren’t a sure thing however –  as the weather service will be watching to see if the atmosphere can recover from this morning’s activity – which did take some of the juice out of the environment.  Temperatures will rise, and that could help fuel storm development later today over eastern parts of the state.

Those storms are expected to move out of the state by late this afternoon, and calmer and drier weather will take hold for the weekend.  There are no other severe weather threats on the horizon as we head into next week.
