BOAZ – The Cherokee County High School soccer teams swept their area matches at Boaz on Monday. The Lady Warriors earned a 3-1 victory, while the Warrior boys claimed a 2-1 win.

In the girls match, Ava Haygood scored twice and Ella Clifton scored once to give the Warriors their second win of the season.

“Breanna Pierce and Grace Sarazin played well and really helped our defense shut Boaz down in the second half,” head coach Matthew Pharr said. “Kaylee Green did a great job in goal and earned her second win of the season. Emmalee Morrison, Chloe Wood, and Isabella Segura didn’t get on the stat sheet, but they were instrumental in keeping us organized and composed in some real tense moments.

“I’m extremely proud of this group of girls. They have grown a ton throughout the season and I look forward to finishing this season strong and getting ready to do big things next season.”

In the nightcap, Andrew Morrison scored the Warriors’ first goal, and Tanner Young scored the game winner with seven minutes remaining in regulation, helping Cherokee County improve to 6-4 on the season (4-4 area play).

“This was a hard fought game,” Pharr said. “We really came out on the front foot and had Boaz reeling early, but we had a lot of trouble beating their keeper. Our defense shut down an extremely strong Boaz team, and that’s a feat itself. I am extremely proud of this group.

“Tanner has practiced the free kick that won us the game daily. He even sent me videos over spring break to prove it, and as soon as we got the kick I knew it was his moment and I trusted that he would get the job done.”

“If there is one thing you can say about all of these guys, it’s that they hate to lose. They’ll stand on their head to win a game if they have to, and that makes this team really fun to coach.”

Pharr went on to say Daniel Mejia, Will Frampton, Alex McCord and Tucker Neyman were also standouts on the night.

Tucker Neyman earned his fifth win of the season, which is awesome for a first year keeper,” Pharr said. “He’s done a great job stepping into a position he’s never played and commands the field as a leader.”

Both Warrior squads travel to Etowah on Tuesday.
