WEIS Radio News has been following a developing story concerning an incident that has surfaced via a video that was posted to social media over the Fourth of July weekend in Centre.

Scott East said his family had planned a trip several weeks ago to the Pirate’s Bay Water Park in Cherokee County to include making reservations at the a local motel. East, a resident of Georgia and wheelchair bound, says he booked a room at the Weiss Lake Lodge in Centre several days in advance of his family’s vacation to Weiss Lake, but when he arrived to check into his room, he was denied accommodations because of him being in a wheelchair.

WEIS Radio News spoke to Scott on Wednesday afternoon –

Scott told us that his only issue is making the wrong right.

We attempted to speak to the owners of the motel on Wednesday afternoon, but were unable to reach anybody for comment. According to media outlets that spoke with management, they claim that they were not notified in advance they that East needed an ADA compliant room and say that they tried to communicate that the ADA room was not clean and available at the time they were trying to check in.

East told us that he and his family were able to find accommodations at the Bay Springs Country Inn and were able to enjoy their vacation at Pirate’s Bay Water Park and had high praise for tourism on Weiss Lake.

We have posted the video of the incident below. The establishment claims that the female clerk in question is no longer employed with the business.

East contacted us late Wednesday afternoon and informed us that the management at the motel had asked him to remove the video from social media, to which he declined.

East says that he has contacted an attorney concerning the incident.
