The man charged with shooting another motorist at point-blank range following the two-vehicle auto accident in Gadsden on Tuesday, June 22nd – has now been charged with Capital Murder in that case.

Thirty-seven year old Joseph Edward Burnett of Guntersville, stands accused of firing multiple rounds into the vehicle of Brad Doleys, in the wake of what appeared to be a minor accident at around 1:00pm that day at the East Meghan Boulevard bridge, at the intersection with Hood Avenue.

According to media reports, afterwards Burnett attempted to leave the scene but was unable to do so possibly because the bumpers of the two vehicles had become locked together in the collision.  Police arrived and took him into custody without incident.

Doleys was transported from the scene to UAB for treatment, but later passed away – he had worked at Mountain View Hospital as a counselor since 2001.

Burnett was originally charged with Attempted Murder following the shooting, and upon the death of Doleys, the charge was upped to Capital Murder.  He remains in the Etowah County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.

At this point, very little information has been released by law enforcement and there has been no motive stated in relation to the incident.

A memorial service for Brad Doleys will be held Friday, July 2nd at Rivercahse United Methodist Church (1953 Old Montgomery Highway) in Birmingham, at 11:00am with visitation one hour prior to the service.

There will also be a Celebration of Life service held in Gadsden, at the Venue at Coosa Landing (201 George Wallace Drive) on Sunday, July 11th starting at 5:00pm.
