It now appears that around 100 employees at Mount Vernon Mills will be looking for work elsewhere within the next 30 days – that, in the wake of an announcement Wednesday that several departments at the mill in Trion would be shutting down.

Mount Vernon Mills President and CEO William E. Duncan issued a statement saying Mount Vernon Mills will be phasing out all of their yarn operations, impacting the cotton receiving, card room and spinning segments at the mill.

Last week Mount Vernon announced the closing of their plant in Alto, Georgia.  The mill had been in operation since 1967, producing yarn; it also had a weave shop.  At that time, local plant manager Randy Henderson, told media outlets all operations at the Trion mill would be “operating as normal.”

However, on Tuesday of this week (January 14th) Henderson stated that the ending of yarn production will mean some workers in the departments that are closing will be transferred to other jobs in the mill, but around 100 people would be losing their jobs within the next thirty days.

The cotton mill in Trion has been in operation since 1845 – and it is the largest employer in Chattooga County, providing around 1700 jobs and accounting for roughly 80% of the taxes paid to the Town of Trion.
