Georgia Power has submitted a proposal to the Georgia Public Service Commission – and, if all of their proposals are agreed to by the state regulatory commission, Plant Hammond in Floyd County could close as early as August of this year (2019).

Georgia Power has had plans to close Hammond in the works for several years and its 2016 Integrated Resource Plan limited capital investment at the plant to no more than $5 million a year. 

Georgia Power is planning for a demonstration of solar power on the closed coal ash ponds at Plant Hammond, and is reportedly moving forward with the plans.  Preliminary plans for the development of several projects are currently under review by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division as part of the coal ash pond closure permits.
